Let’s take the mystery
out of the editing process.
What happens next?
If you haven’t worked with an editor before, you’re likely wondering how the whole process works. Here’s what working with me looks like!
STEP ONE: Consultation
The first step is for us to spend some time discussing your project so we can make sure we’re a good fit for each other. I will ask you some questions about your manuscript so I can learn more about your writing, your goals, and the services you require. This can take the form of an email questionnaire or a video call, whichever works best for you. I will also request a sample of your book so I can get a feel for what your needs are. At the end of this process, we’ll discuss what level of editing you want, the cost of that service, and a timeline for the editing process.
STEP TWO: Booking
If you decide to hire me, I will send you a contract to sign detailing the services we’ve agreed upon and their cost. I request 50% of the fee up front as a deposit, and the rest is due after I deliver the final round of edits. If this payment schedule doesn’t work for you, I’m happy to discuss alternate arrangements.
STEP THREE: Editing
After I’ve received the contract and deposit, I’ll ask you to send me the full manuscript before our agreed-upon start date. Once the manuscript is in my hands, try not to work on it until you have my feedback! I’ll check in if I have any questions or if run into any issues, but I don’t offer regular updates unless specifically requested. Once I’ve completed my edits, I’ll send the editorial letter and marked-up manuscript (if relevant) along with instructions for the next steps.
Throughout this process, I’m also happy to discuss your publishing goals and answer questions on how you can achieve them. In some cases, I can also advise you on the various steps of the self-publishing process.
Frequently Asked Questions
Do you offer copyediting?
While I am capable of performing copyediting, and I include it in my line editing service, I don’t generally offer it as a standalone service. To be honest, I’m not good at sticking to just spelling and grammar, and I often end up doing more work than I signed on for—and sometimes, more work than the author wants!
For this reason, I only offer copyediting as a standalone service if I have seen your manuscript and believe that it’s all you need.
Do you offer proofreading?
I do not offer proofreading. It’s simply not how I like to spend my time!
How long does editing take?
Unfortunately, there is no simple answer to this question! The timeline for the editing process depends on the length of your manuscript, the type of book you’ve written, the level of editing required, and the timeline for your own revisions (if relevant). We will discuss the timeline for your specific project during the initial consultation.
Do you use AI as part of your editing services?
No, I do not use AI for any part of my editing work. I have also turned off the “connected experiences” setting in Microsoft Word to prevent your writing from being used to train AI models.
Do you take payment plans?
I offer payment plans on a case-by-case basis. If you require a payment plan, please let me know during our initial discussion so we can come up with a plan that works for both of us.
